A voice that other people can write for
Crypton Future Media's characters accompany software that lets creators work with a singing voice. Music, artwork and videos give those voices settings far beyond the original package designs. There is no single continuous adventure explaining every costume: the particular song, illustrator or event supplies its own context.
The identities beneath the costumes
Miku's turquoise twin tails, Rin's ribbon, Len's tied-back blond hair and Luka's long pink hair remain useful points of recognition. New clothing can change the mood dramatically while keeping that identity legible. The relationship between a familiar character and an individual creator's interpretation is central to their visual appeal.
Songs can give the cast different roles
A song may give Rin or Len a character to play, with a relationship specific to that work. Another song can begin again with entirely different circumstances. Treating those stories separately preserves what makes each meaningful and avoids turning one creator's scenario into a universal biography for the virtual singers.
Performances and seasonal designs
Magical Mirai combines live performance with an exhibition around the creative culture of Hatsune Miku. Snow Miku is tied to Hokkaido, while Sakura Miku uses spring imagery. Costumes associated with these settings carry a connection to an event or place, alongside the musical and illustrated works that continue to reinterpret the singers.
