Familiar names across different lives
Many Zelda games follow different incarnations of Link, Zelda and their enemies. Their histories cannot all be assembled into one uninterrupted personal biography. The sea of The Wind Waker, the world of Twilight Princess and the Hyrule of Breath of the Wild each give familiar roles a different setting.
Link's clothes locate an adventure
The green tunic is central to many portrayals, while Breath of the Wild connects blue clothing to Link's role as a Champion. The Wind Waker's expressive proportions and the toy-like treatment of the Link's Awakening remake give other adventures distinct visual languages. A familiar name can therefore accompany a very different kind of remembered journey.
Zelda and Ganondorf carry different responsibilities
Zelda's royal role changes with the circumstances of her Hyrule. In Breath of the Wild, research and the burden of awakening her power sit alongside Link's military duty. Ganondorf's ambitions repeatedly endanger that world, but his designs and circumstances also belong to particular games rather than one unchanging appearance.
Midna's place in Twilight Princess
Midna begins as Link's demanding guide after he has taken wolf form. Their uneasy arrangement becomes a partnership tied to the Twilight Realm and her own identity. Her imp appearance and Wolf Link recall that shared journey, where understanding the guide becomes as important as following her instructions.
