Resident Evil

A uniform in Resident Evil can place someone at the beginning of a career, before experience has taught them what an outbreak can become. Leon, Jill and Chris return to that danger in different roles. Nemesis belongs to the other side of the pursuit: a weapon designed to recognize and eliminate its targets.

The story

Understanding Resident Evil

The first night and the first operation

Leon arrives in Raccoon City expecting to begin police work. Jill and Chris encounter the mansion as members of S.T.A.R.S., a team whose own leadership cannot be trusted. Their early uniforms belong to people working from assumptions that the outbreak and its hidden origins will overturn.

The survivors keep working

Later missions give Leon, Jill and Chris new equipment and institutional roles. Chris and Jill's involvement in the BSAA follows their experience of bioweapons, while Leon moves from police work into government service. The changes in clothing record different assignments, without making a survivor immune to fear, exhaustion or the loss of another team.

Why Nemesis keeps coming

In Resident Evil 3, Nemesis pursues members of S.T.A.R.S. with an ability to select targets and use weapons. That purpose distinguishes it from an infected person encountered by chance. Its mutations make the pursuit increasingly physical, as the body changes and containment becomes harder to maintain.

An appearance belongs to a particular game

The original games and their remakes revisit familiar incidents through different performances and designs. Jill's outfits, Leon's police gear and Nemesis's containment all reflect those interpretations. Recognizing the game gives each appearance a setting, while leaving room for the same character's life to continue in later stories.
