Final Fantasy VII

Cloud arrives in Midgar carrying a sword and an account of his past that will not hold together. Final Fantasy VII draws Tifa, Aerith and Sephiroth into the questions that follow. Their figures recall a journey shaped by memory, the planet and the people Shinra has left behind.

The story

Understanding Final Fantasy VII

A city living on borrowed energy

Midgar runs on mako drawn from the planet. Cloud's work for Avalanche begins as a paid job, while Tifa already has responsibilities to the people living beneath the plates. Aerith knows another part of the city, where flowers grow around a ruined church. Their different lives make the consequences of Shinra's power tangible.

The sword and the story Cloud tells

The Buster Sword accompanies Cloud's claim to have served in SOLDIER. Sephiroth's long Masamune belongs to a reputation that reaches into Cloud and Tifa's childhood. As their accounts of Nibelheim become harder to reconcile, familiar weapons carry questions about who remembers an event and what they have been able to admit.

The original game and the remake project

The original Final Fantasy VII and the Remake project give the cast different visual treatments. Remake and Rebirth expand scenes, spaces and relationships through much more detailed performances. The changes belong to particular games; an outfit or face drawn from one should be understood within that interpretation of the journey.

Lives beyond a battle costume

Wall Market outfits recall the companions improvising their way into Don Corneo's mansion. Tifa's bar and Aerith's flowers preserve daily work alongside the larger conflict. These quieter settings give their more familiar fighting clothes a human context: there are homes, routines and people they are trying to return to.
