Joker Figure
Joker’s long coat, white mask and red gloves belong to the life he keeps hidden from Shujin Academy. In Tokyo, he is a transfer student living above a café. In the Metaverse, he leads the Phantom Thieves into worlds shaped by the people they intend to confront.
Joker figures draw on both sides of Persona 5. Understanding the student behind the mask gives the Phantom Thief appearance a history: he arrives in the city under suspicion before finding people willing to trust him.

Story and character
The student who arrives in Tokyo
The protagonist moves to Tokyo while on probation for a crime of which he was falsely accused. Starting again at Shujin means living with a reputation that precedes him. His school uniform places him in that daily routine, where classmates and adults form opinions before knowing him.
The game gives those ordinary days room to matter. Classes, part-time work and time spent with friends sit alongside the Palace infiltrations. Relationships formed around the city become practical help for his life as a thief, so the quiet student and the masked leader continually affect one another.
What the Phantom Thief costume belongs to
Palaces make a person’s distorted desires into places the thieves can enter. Stealing the Treasure at the heart of one of these worlds becomes their means of forcing a corrupt target to confront what they have done. Joker’s theatrical clothes belong to those infiltrations.
The coat and gloves suit the game’s rooftop leaps, ambushes and escapes, while the mask makes concealment part of his appearance. A school-life portrayal recalls the time spent building his new life; the Phantom Thief design recalls what he risks that life to do. Both come from the same year in Tokyo.
Arsène and the thief imagery
Arsène is Joker’s first Persona. The name invokes Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief created by Maurice Leblanc, and the masked face and dark wings extend the outlaw imagery beyond Joker’s own clothes.
A Persona is a power he can summon, rather than another costume he puts on. Keeping that distinction makes the relationship between Joker and Arsène easier to read in artwork and figures: one is the young man acting in the Metaverse, the other the being called forth beside him.
The mask recalls a heist; the school uniform recalls the life around it. Persona 5 gives Joker time to inhabit both.
